Check Vehicle Donation Criteria First

Vehicle Donation Criteria:
  • Vehicle must be 1995 or newer
  • Vehicle must be in running condition
If vehicle doesn't meet these criteria, the HSCC cannot accept the donation. We have to follow our criteria because the auction company charges us for each vehicle we accept and tow. The United Charities of Maryland (Phone 888-959-9093) will accept older vehicles.

Vehicle Pick-up

When the Humane Society receives the title, we will contact the towing company and let you know of the approximate date you can expect pick up.
  • The vehicle has to be in a position that a tow truck can get to it.
  • The keys should be left in the glove compartment of the vehicle
  • Remove the tags.. you'll need to turn this into the DMV later!
  • Take all personal items out of the vehicle
  • We will fax in your information to the towing company as soon as you drop off the title at the Kennel. The towing company will then contact you by phone. Normally, the towing company will pick up your vehicle within 48 hours after they've made contact with you.
  • You do not have to be there when they arrive!

Claiming Your Donation On Your Taxes

The IRS allows donors to deduct the amount received from the sale of your donated automobile, truck or boat. The Federal Tax for you use to claim your donation is IRS Form 8283. If you donate a car to charity after December 31, 2004, and you are eligible to take a tax deduction in excess of $500, your deduction is limited to the amount of gross proceeds the Humane Society receives from its sale. Once your donated vehicle has been sold by the auction company we work with, they will notify us of the net amount the Humane Society will realize as a result of its sale. We'll then send you a thank you letter and we'll let you know the net amount the Humane Society actually received from the sale of the vehicle. That will be the amount you'll be able to claim on your taxes for your donation.
