How You Can Help

If you're curious about volunteering, or have already decided to help, just click through some of the things you can do below, then visit our Past Events pages to get an idea of what others have done. Thanks for taking the time to look through our site!

Donate! By clicking on the donate button you are giving the means to provide food, shelter and medical care to animals that may not get it any other way. In addition, you are providing them a second chance by giving us the means to provide adoption services. And that's not all. The low cost spay and neuter, low cost rabies vaccinations clinics and Humane Education for the public all depend on your donation.

Grants or Donations of Money
Charitable donations are encouraged, and provide a substantial part of the funds we use to operate. We are a United Way Member Agency, and can receive designated funds during United Way funding campaigns. Of course, we gratefully accept any monetary donations at any time, from individuals, groups, or businesses. Checks should be made out to the Humane Society of Charles County and mailed to the address at the top of the page, or brought by our shelter (click here for directions).

Yard Sale Donations
You can donate to our yard sales. We have just obtained a large storage shed just for the purpose of storing yard sale items, so don't worry about us not being able to store your donation. It won't get rained on! We are looking for household items, glassware, books, and just about anything else that is in decent operating order (sorry, we can't take clothes, furniture or old computers). We can't do repair work, so broken items will not be of use. The yard sales are held periodically in the Humane Society parking lot. Check out our Upcoming Events page to find out if there is a yard sale in the near future. Yard sale items are accepted at any time. Call (301) 645-8181 after 11am (after 1pm on Thursdays) for more information.

Volunteer Your Time
Many people find that volunteering their time is a very fulfilling way to contribute to their community. Our volunteer program is very active. We depend heavily on our volunteers, whether it be long or short term, a couple of hours a day, a week, a month, or a year. Our volunteers are involved in everything we do, from caring for the animals to working at our events...yard sales, poker nights, craft fairs, fun day and many others. Some volunteers assist with adoption through other volunteer businesses. For example, PetsMart allows us to bring in some of our animals into their store, where many more people will be able to see them, and we are able to increase our adoptions. Other volunteers type letters, perform repairs on our building, provide printing services, and even provide this web site! If you have something you would like to do, give us a call! Or if you'd just like to sign up for a few hours of work that we need done, let us know. There's always a need for volunteers!

Pet Therapy
Consider giving some time each month to visit with your pet to one of our area's care centers. Pets that are approved and their volunteer owners go through a training program. Once they successfully complete the training, they are approved to visit area centers like La Plata Center Genesis Elder Care, Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Morningside House and Fenwick Landing (senior Community Center), Pathways Residential Support Homes in Hollywood, MD. You can call the HSCC at (301) 645-8181 after 11am (after 1pm on Thursdays) or our Pet Therapy Director, Anita Marsh at (301) 259-4139 for further information.
