Weekly TipsClick here for Previous TipsSaturday, April 21, 2001. From the American Humane Association Before You Start Looking For A Puppy, Take A Good Long Look At Yourself
Will you be home during the day to feed the puppy regular meals and to train it properly?
Are you prepared to exercise your puppy at least twice a day on a regular schedule?
And to obey the leash and license laws in our area? We're all busy these days, working and taking care of homes and family.
Animals need companionship just like us. If you're gone 8 or 9 hours a day or more, that can make for
a very lonely existance.
Will you pay for shots, exams, emergency treatment and neutering if needed? (There is a serious
overpopulation problem in our area- its your responsibility not to add to it!)
Animals need care, and like people the need increases as they grow older.
Are you prepared to be a companion to your pet when your pet needs you and not just at your own convenience? A pet that gets tied up in the back yard day after day, or ignored all of the time leads a miserable life. MAKE SURE YOU REALLY WANT A PET- BEFORE YOU BRING ONE HOME. Take a look at yourself...why do you want a pet? Can you make the committment in time and money? Make sure that desire for a pet is not just a passing fancy. Did you know that a large number of the pets that come to the shelter are actually turned over by people that don't want their pet any more? Because they don't have the time...because they can't afford it...because they didn't realize the committment involved. We're looking for a few good, loving homes that will last a lifetime.
